7 Lock & Key Fun Facts

  • Wooden Locks: Typical locks these days are made of metal for stronger protection. However, the earliest account of locks being used was by the ancient Egyptians who constructed large wooden bolts 4,000 years ago.
  • Fort Knox Locks: Fort Knox houses a large portion of the United States’ gold reserves. As one of the most secure buildings in the world, the codes change daily to unlock the front door.
  • Basic Security Measures: Locks do more good than you might think! Thirty percent of burglaries occur because of windows or doors that are simply left unlocked.
  • Key Keepers: In the Medieval Era, some parts of the world had designated town guards or ‘Key Keepers’ who were in charge of holding all the house keys.
  • Locksmith Apprenticeships: Apprenticeships may seem like an outdated term but in the locksmith industry, it’s common to undergo an apprenticeship to become qualified as a Master Locksmith.
  • Combination Lock: One of the earliest combination locks was invented by James Sargent, an American locksmith, in 1857. Many aspects of his design are still used in combination locks today.
