Emergency Car Lockout: What Every Driver Should Know

woman locked outside of car

The panic sets in quickly when all of the sudden, you don’t have access to your vehicle! It’s so easy to get locked out of your car when you’re juggling multiple bags, children, or in a new situation or vehicle. R.J. Lock and Security has guidance on emergency car lockouts and what every driver should know.

What to Do When You’re Locked Out of Your Car

First, stay calm and recheck all of the vehicle’s entry points and all of your belongings. You can always call R.J. Lock & Security at 410-213-8477 if you lock your keys in your car. While you wait, here are some things you can do to stay safe and make a plan.

  • Move to a Safe Location to Call for Help
The safest location is likely not just outside your locked car, especially if it’s near a roadway. Walk to the nearest business where you can await assistance without the risk of exposure to the weather, traffic, or drawing unwanted attention to your situation. Call for help, and remember to share your location and the car’s location with a friend or relative.
  • Locate a Backup Key
If you know you have a spare key at home, call for a taxi or rideshare to help you retrieve the key if you can’t get a friend or family member to bring it to you. Think carefully about your plan, as you may or may not want to retrieve the car immediately if it’s late at night or in a dark, unlit environment. If the car is safe, and can be left until the next day, consider leaving it until daylight. If you’re leaving the car overnight, contact the owner of the parking lot or the local parking authority to make them aware of the situation to avoid getting towed, if possible.
  • Call Your Insurance Company
Your auto insurance policy may include some level of roadside assistance. Contact the 24/7 customer service line to see if they can help. If not, R.J. Lock & Security is available 24 hours a day.
  • Avoid Damaging Your Vehicle
It can be tempting to try to bend the frame and use a hanger to unlock the car yourself. Most of these methods need to be done delicately, ideally by an experienced professional. Contact the R.J. Lock & Security team to ensure no one who “has seen this on TV” bends the door frame beyond repair.
