How Weather Affects Automotive Locks and Keys

When the temperatures hit severe highs or drastic lows, it seems like many things just don’t operate as expected! The last thing anyone wants is to not have access to their vehicle when harsh weather hits. R.J. Lock & Security has more on how weather affects automotive locks and keys, and how to prevent issues.

Effects of Extreme Heat or Cold on Car Locks

Expansion and Contraction: The metal components in locks expand or contract based on their temperature. In intense heat, metals expand, potentially causing mechanisms to jam or operate less smoothly. Conversely, in freezing temperatures, metals contract, which can lead to stiffened mechanisms or keys fitting improperly. To have your car’s situation assessed, contact R.J. Lock & Security.

Moisture and Corrosion: Humidity and precipitation from temperature fluctuation can introduce moisture into lock mechanisms. Over time, this moisture can lead to rust and corrosion, which can limit the movement of the lock components, making them more difficult to operate or causing them to seize up completely.

Rubber Components: Weather changes can also affect rubber seals and components around the door frame and keyholes. When the rubber parts on the door frame don’t fit snugly, unnecessary pressure can be placed on the lock. In blistering heat, rubber seals may degrade faster, potentially affecting the door’s ability to seal properly. In frigid cold, rubber can stiffen, making it harder for keys to function.

Battery Drain: In very cold temperatures, auto batteries can lose power more quickly. This can affect whether a key fob or electronic locking mechanisms can work.

How to Prevent Issue with Vehicle Locks

Protective Measures: Parking in a garage or carport can shield vehicles from direct exposure to intense heat or cold, which can lessen their impact. In searing daytime heat, using a solar shield on the dashboard can lower the overall temperature inside the car. Using a cover can help protect the car’s locks from very cold temperatures.

Regular Maintenance: If you’re concerned about functionality, ask your mechanic to inspect the locks at your next maintenance visit. Keeping keys clean and keyholes lubricated with appropriate products can reduce the likelihood of moisture buildup and corrosion.

De-Icing Products: If your locks freeze, be cautious about what liquids or chemicals you use to try to remove the ice. Contact R.J. Lock & Security for advice or assistance.
