Transponder Keys Explained

Most cars made within the past 20 years come with a transponder key to increase anti-theft security measures. The keys have a microchip that transmits a low-level signal for the vehicle to detect when the key is in the switch. If the digital serial number in the transponder matches the one in the car, it will start when the key is turned.

What are some benefits to having a transponder key? The transponder adds a higher level of security to your vehicle. If a copied key is used, or someone tries to hotwire the car, the vehicle won’t start because there is no signal from the key. The digital ID is unique and makes hotwiring or breaking the ignition lock more difficult than a traditional key with only a standard cut combination.

What should you do if you have to fix the programming in your transponder key? Locksmiths can help fix the programming of the car keys based on the computer in your car. Whether you need the key reprogrammed, or a duplicate made, we have the skills to help with several makes and models of cars.
